White Scar Cave

Sightseeing attraction | Carnforth | England | United Kingdom

Best attractions Yorkshire Dales

The White Scar Cave in Carnforth, England, is one of the most impressive natural attractions in Britain and is considered the longest show cave in the country. This fascinating underground world is located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, nestled in the picturesque landscape below Ingleborough Hill, offering visitors a unique journey into the depths of the earth. The cave is a geological wonder, shaped over millions of years by the forces of water and limestone, combining spectacular formations with a rich history that captivates both adventurers and nature lovers.

Fascination underground caves Britain

Discovered in 1923 by Christopher Long, a Cambridge student who found the original entrance and undertook the first explorations, the White Scar Cave has since been further explored, including the impressive "Battlefield Cavern," which was made accessible to the public in 1991 through an access tunnel. The cave spans approximately six kilometers, with the guided visitor route covering about a mile and taking around 80 minutes. This route leads through a series of chambers adorned with underground waterfalls, streams, and thousands of stalactites and stalagmites. The combination of sea cave and karst cave makes it a rare geological phenomenon, shaped both by the erosive power of the sea and freshwater.

Geological wonders of White Scar Cave

One of the highlights of the tour is the "Battlefield Cavern," one of the largest known cave chambers in Britain. With a length of over 90 meters and a ceiling height reaching up to 30 meters in places, this space is a breathtaking sight. Thousands of stalactites hang in large clusters from the ceiling, while prehistoric mud floors cover the ground – an area considered scientifically significant and preserving traces of the first explorers. Along the way, visitors encounter fascinating formations such as the "Devil's Tongue," a distinctive limestone structure, the "Arum Lily," resembling an elegant flower, and the "Judge's Head," a stalagmite that stands out for its lifelike form. Another spectacular feature is a powerful waterfall, particularly impressive after rainfall when up to 55 tons of water per minute rush through the cave.

Family friendly activities in caves

The atmosphere in the White Scar Cave is a mix of mystique and adventure. Visitors enter the cave through an illuminated path that passes cascading waterfalls and massive flowstone benches. The air is cool and humid, and the constant dripping of water creates a soothing, almost meditative sound. The tour is guided by knowledgeable guides who not only explain the geological features but also enrich the experience with humor and stories. The lighting is carefully placed to highlight the natural colors of the formations, especially the emerald green algae growing on the walls. For families, the cave is an exciting experience, although it requires a certain level of physical fitness due to stairs, low ceilings, and uneven floors.

Tour through Battlefield Cavern

In addition to the cave itself, the visitor center offers additional amenities to complete the stay. A café with an alpine atmosphere serves hot meals, snacks, and drinks that are welcome after the tour, while a shop offers a selection of minerals, jewelry, and souvenirs. Picnic areas overlooking the surrounding Dales to the sea invite visitors to linger, and the proximity to other attractions such as the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail makes the location ideal for a day trip. The park is also an example of environmentally conscious design, with a grass-covered roof on the visitor center that blends harmoniously into the landscape.

Fascinating underground caverns, waterfall, stalagmites, stalactites this activity is not for the disabled or limited mobility. Bending and squeezing involved. Walking involved about a mile there and back to the exit. All underground.

What a wonderful experience! Our tour guide, thomas, was incredibly informative and knowledgeable, it was an absolute pleasure to be toured by him. There were many different 'attractions' that made this walk worth it: it absolutely blew my mind seeing fossilised coral and sea creatures embedded into the stone. I'm so grateful this tour exists and that it's open to the public, it's an unforgettable experience and worth every penny!

Visited the cave yesterday and had a great experience! Our tour guide was Mike and he made it very enjoyable and fun, you could tell he cares a lot about the cave, he was very informative and could answer any questions we had about the cave. The café and gift shop is also very cute, it has a nice selection of souvenirs and offers a really nice view while you wait for the tour to start.

Had a fabulous guide called Thomas who explained everything so well and then went above and beyond when we had finished the cave tour telling us about the local interest and area. It is well worth the £18, money well spent. Large car park and a nice cafe

We got there just in time for the 4pm tour with Mark - what a fabulous cave visit! Mark was super knowledgable and answered all of our questions, pointing out all the fossils and cave formations on the way. Fabulous way to spend over an hour, highly recommended!

Visited on a wet January Sunday afternoon so it wasn't busy. The guide was really good and answered my questions. In our group there was someone with a slight mobility issue. It wasn't after he paid and was just inside that it was mentioned in the safety briefing about the low ceiling and having to crouch down. Maybe ceiling height before you pay could be an option. <<<< This is constructive feedback and I would recommend this place.

This truly is a magnificent and stunning Cave Attraction and one of the best Caves to see in the North of England. Access into the Caves is by guided tour only which lasts for 80 minutes and the tours run throughout the day at 10:30hrs with the first tour and the last tour at 15:00hrs. The other tour times are at 11:00hrs, 12:00hrs, 13:00hrs and 14:00hrs. The tours of the cave are thoroughly informative, engaging and riveting learning how the Caves were formed from the last ice age and also about the interesting different features you see on your journey through the cavern and how they were formed. There are a number of different features and these are The Witch's Finger, The First Waterfall, The Judge's Head, The Squeeze, Arum Lily, The Devil's Tongue, The Face, Battlefield Cavern & The Carrots. The most interesting and intriguing features are The Witch's Fingers, Arum Lily and The Judge's Head as they are exquisite and it's absolutely fascinating and amazing how these feature have formed over thousands of years ago. The Cave is also renowned as the longest showcase in Britain and two of the best features in the Cave are The First Waterfall and The Battlefield Cavern due to the fact seeing a Waterfall underground in a Cave system is a stunning sight but also unique at any showcase you will see in the UK and The Battefield Cavern is a truly vast spectacle of a Cavern and a truly amazing sight and the best view of any vast Cavern in the UK. On the Cave tours you can also learn how the Cave were discovered by Christopher Long in 1923, which is a very interesting story and also a captivating one. There is a cafe selling a variety of food and drink at reasonable prices and also there is a lovely gift shop selling a nice range of souvenirs at reasonable prices. Overall this is a sensational and stunning place to visit and makes for a fascinating and enjoyable day out and is well worth a visit in the Yorkshire Dales.

Well priced expedition for a fantastically guided experience. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is even just passing. Our guide Mark was very knowledgeable not just about the cave but about the composition of the interior and the processes that make it look as amazing as it does.
